Systems I have built

GRITS

Global Rapid Identification of Threats System: production natural-language processing that detects outbreaks in open text where no laboratory exists. Built as principal investigator on a $5.8M Defense Threat Reduction Agency program, then independently evaluated and verified in the peer-reviewed literature.

Interdisciplinary Perspectives on Infectious Diseases, 2016 →

CRISTAL

Criticality Spatial Analysis: DHS-funded supply-chain mapping and spatial vulnerability assessment developed at the Food Protection and Defense Institute after his evaluation of FASCAT, the sector’s prior tool, exposed its problems. Patent application filed; protected as a trade secret.

Risk Analysis, 2015 (the FASCAT evaluation) →

FLIRT

Flight-network model that predicted the United States arrival states for Zika before the cases appeared, validated against the epidemic as it unfolded.

PLoS Currents Outbreaks, 2016 →

How I work

Evidence first.

Sources cited, methods stated, every claim traceable to a document.

Known, assessed, unknown.

A hard line between the three, stated every time.

Bottom line first.

Written for the person who has to decide, then the analysis that supports it.

About

I spent my career inside the institutions that are supposed to protect you: the Army, national laboratories, the biodefense enterprise, and the pandemic-prediction organization at the center of the COVID-19 origins question. What I learned is that when protecting the public conflicts with protecting the institution, the institution usually wins. My work is built to break that pattern.
